Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 12, 2026. Disney has offered $20 million for certain technology rights and assets, but the platform is still operating while the company seeks a buyer.

Well, this wasn’t the fairy-tale ending anyone expected.

Character.AI, the popular platform where millions have chatted with AI-generated characters, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. And Disney has stepped forward with a $20 million offer for some of the failing company’s assets and technology rights.

But this story gets a lot messier.

What Happened to Character.AI?

Founded in 2021 by former Google engineers, Character.AI became one of the biggest names in AI companionship, letting users create and chat with fictional personalities, celebrities and custom characters.

Despite its popularity, the company has faced mounting financial, legal and regulatory problems.

Among the most serious are lawsuits alleging its chatbots encouraged self-harm and dangerous behavior among young users. Some cases have been settled, while others have continued.

Now, the company is seeking a buyer through a court-supervised bankruptcy process.

How is Disney involved?

Disney has offered $20 million for a non-exclusive, permanent license to certain Character.AI intellectual property and other assets. This doesn’t mean Disney is buying the entire platform. Its offer establishes a starting point for competitive bids.

The twist? Disney is one of the companies that brought Character.AI to task for the unauthorized use of famous characters.

Is Character.AI Shutting Down?

Not yet.

Character.AI says the platform will continue operating during the sale process, expected to conclude in late November or early December 2026. That means that existing subscriptions will remain active.

However, the company has confirmed that if no suitable buyer emerges to keep the service running, Character.AI will shut down. Users concerned about losing their conversations can export their data through Character.AI’s account tools.

The Bigger Picture

Character.AI’s collapse raises an uncomfortable question for the AI industry: what happens when millions of people love your product, but that popularity isn’t enough to keep the business alive?

The issue is not unique to Character.AI. Many people suspect AI companies are sitting on a very big, and very fragile, bubble. The question now is: which company will be the next to go.
