ElevenLabs is one of those AI tools that became famous for doing one thing ridiculously well, and then apparently looked around and decided it wanted to do everything else too.
It made its name producing AI voices that didn’t sound like a GPS having an existential crisis.
Today, ElevenLabs does text-to-speech, voice cloning, dubbing, speech-to-text, sound effects, music, AI agents, images, video, avatars and even advertising tools.
The good news?
Its voice technology really is excellent.
The less-good news?
The credit meter is always lurking in the corner, quietly judging your creative decisions.
What Is ElevenLabs?
At its core, ElevenLabs is still an AI audio platform.
Its main tools include:
- Text-to-speech
- Instant Voice Cloning
- Professional Voice Cloning
- Voice Changer
- Speech-to-text
- Voice isolation
- Automatic dubbing
- Sound effects
- AI music
- Conversational AI agents
- Studio production tools
It has also expanded into AI-generated images and video, avatars and advertising production through its broader ElevenCreative platform.
That expansion matters.
ElevenLabs is no longer simply competing with other AI voice generators. It increasingly wants creators and marketers to build an entire project without leaving ElevenLabs.
The Voices Are Still the Main Attraction
This remains the reason to subscribe.
ElevenLabs can produce some of the most convincing synthetic speech we’ve heard.
Good generations have natural pacing, convincing pauses, proper emotional inflection and enough variation that they don’t immediately scream:
HELLO HUMAN. I HAVE BEEN PROGRAMMED TO SOUND CASUAL.
Eleven v3 supports dozens of languages and lets creators direct performances using cues for emotions, reactions and delivery.
Voice cloning is also excellent.
Instant Voice Cloning gives you a relatively quick approximation of a speaker, while Professional Voice Cloning is intended to create a much more faithful digital version.
For YouTube channels, podcasts, training material, audiobooks, ads, games and faceless content, this can eliminate a substantial amount of recording work.
It can also rescue creators who have discovered that recording the same sentence 37 times does not, in fact, make them sound more enthusiastic.
But It Isn’t Perfect
You will occasionally get:
- Strange pronunciation
- Unexpected pauses
- Accent drift
- Odd emphasis
- Changes in emotional delivery
- A line that simply sounds…wrong
Sometimes the next generation fixes it immediately. Sometimes your perfectly normal narrator suddenly sounds like they’ve had three martinis at lunch.
ElevenLabs itself acknowledges that more expressive voice settings can produce less predictable results, so there is still a trade-off between creativity and consistency.
For most projects, however, the quality ceiling is extremely high.
Video Generation: ElevenLabs Wants Your Entire Workflow
This is one of the biggest changes to ElevenLabs: ElevenCreative now includes full image and video generation rather than simply letting users add narration to externally created footage.
You can generate images, turn them into video, create clips from prompts, add voices, music and sound effects, generate captions, add lip-sync and combine everything inside Studio.
But there’s an important distinction.
ElevenLabs isn’t suddenly beating Google, OpenAI and Kling at their own video models.
It is bringing many of those models inside ElevenLabs.
The platform provides access to models including Veo, Sora, Kling, Wan and Seedance and then combines them with ElevenLabs’ own audio technology.
You can potentially generate your visual, animate it, create the narration, add sound effects, generate music, add captions and finish the project without assembling a small Avengers team of AI subscriptions.
Is The Video Good?
Potentially very good, because the underlying models can be very good. The results depend heavily on which model you choose.
That also means ElevenLabs isn’t automatically the cheapest or best place to access every video model. Dedicated platforms may offer more settings, newer model releases or better pricing.
Video generation also consumes substantially more credits than basic voice work.
ElevenLabs currently estimates that its Starter plan can produce roughly 211 seconds of video under certain configurations, while Creator provides considerably more. Actual usage varies according to the model, resolution and settings chosen.
So yes, you can now make the whole video inside ElevenLabs.
Just don’t go into experimental mode clicking Generate like you’re playing a slot machine.
Those credits have families.
Ad Creation Might Be More Interesting Than Video Generation
For businesses and marketers, ElevenLabs’ advertising tools could eventually be one of its most useful additions.
ElevenCreative now promotes tools for UGC-style advertising, avatars, voiceovers, localization and video creation.
More interesting is the newer Ads Engine.
Ads Engine can connect with Google, Meta and LinkedIn advertising accounts, import existing ads and adapt them for different markets.
It can:
- Translate ad copy
- Adapt text appearing inside images
- Dub video ads
- Preserve the original speaker’s voice
- Localize campaigns into more than 50 languages
- Push finished ads back to supported advertising platforms
That is a much more practical use of generative AI than creating yet another cinematic video of a woman walking dramatically through neon rain.
ElevenLabs is essentially trying to turn one successful ad into dozens of localized versions without forcing a marketing team to rebuild each version manually.
There is one major caveat:
Ads Engine is currently an alpha product.
Translation: interesting, potentially very useful, but don’t reorganize your entire marketing department around it just yet.
Dubbing Is Quietly One of Its Best Features
Dubbing doesn’t get as much attention as voice cloning, but it may be one of ElevenLabs’ most commercially useful technologies.
Creators can translate audio and video into other languages while attempting to preserve the original speaker’s vocal identity and delivery.
Combine that with video generation and the newer advertising tools and you can see where ElevenLabs is heading.
Make something once.
Then adapt it for YouTube, social media, international audiences and different advertising markets.
For creators trying to reach audiences outside their native language, that could be considerably more valuable than generating another AI headshot.
Music And Sound Effects
ElevenLabs has also expanded aggressively into generated audio beyond speech.
Sound Effects can create everything from footsteps and ambient noise to explosions and environmental audio from prompts.
Eleven Music goes much further, generating complete music tracks with instrumentals and vocals.
The newer Music tools provide more control over sections and composition, making the feature more practical than the early “type something and hope the robot has good taste” stage of AI music.
Is ElevenLabs suddenly the obvious replacement for every dedicated AI music platform?
No.
But having voices, music and sound design inside the same production environment is genuinely useful.
Convenience is becoming one of ElevenLabs’ strongest selling points.
Now About Those Credits…
Here’s the part we don’t love.
ElevenLabs operates on a credit system. The exact cost varies depending on what you generate. Voice generation, voice chosen, music, video and other tools consume credits differently.
It’s not always clear, and then you have the problem of AI behaving like AI. It won’t always get things right.
I’ve given the same sentence ten different [mood] commands and every generation sounded exactly the same. But I’ve also used no mood commands and received an emotionally complex result.
And expect mispronunciations! When that happens, replace the word with a phonetic version and you’ll be fine.
But every error in output feels like a regeneration tax, as you watch you credits shrink after each failed attempt.
The same issue becomes more expensive once you’re experimenting with images and video.
At least ElevenLabs does allow unused paid-plan credits to roll over. You can accumulate up to two additional months’ worth while remaining on the same subscription tier.
But if you cancel or downgrade, don’t assume your giant pile of carefully hoarded credits will sit there forever waiting for your triumphant return.
Read the rules before changing plans.
What Do Actual Users Say?
This is where things get weird.
On G2, ElevenLabs currently holds approximately 4.5/5 from more than 1,200 reviews, with users regularly praising its voice quality, speed and ease of use.
Trustpilot presents a much messier picture.
Recent reviews include enthusiastic praise for the voices and customer support alongside serious complaints about billing, disappearing credits, account restrictions and confusing subscription handling.
That doesn’t mean the technology is bad.
In fact, even some extremely negative reviews basically say:
“The product is great, but…”
Our read is that ElevenLabs has built an excellent creative product faster than every part of the customer experience has matured around it.
If everything works, people tend to love it. But if something goes wrong involving billing or account access, things can apparently get spicy rather quickly.

The Creator plan is currently offered at $11 for the first month, before returning to its regular $22 monthly price.
For casual experimentation, use Free.
For someone occasionally producing commercial content, Starter may be enough.
For regular creators doing substantial voice work (particularly those using video, dubbing or other newer tools) Creator is probably the first plan we’d seriously consider.
Heavy video generation can make those credits disappear much faster than voice-only use.
As always:
“121,000 credits” sounds enormous right up until you discover what 121,000 credits actually buys.
Commercial Use
Paid ElevenLabs subscriptions generally include commercial usage rights for generated content. The free plan is intended for non-commercial use.
That makes Starter the practical entry point for creators earning money from content.
Some ElevenLabs tools are labelled beta or alpha and may have additional terms. Image & Video, for example, has its own service-specific terms, while Ads Engine remains an alpha product.
Don’t assume every new button that appears inside a paid account automatically carries exactly the same usage conditions.
Nobody wants the exciting part of their creative workflow to become reading terms of service, but here we are.

The Verdict
ElevenLabs is still one of the strongest AI voice platforms available. If all you want is excellent synthetic narration, it is easy to recommend.
But that’s increasingly only half the story. The addition of video generation, images, music, dubbing, avatars, localization and advertising tools is turning ElevenLabs into something much broader: an AI production platform aimed at letting creators and marketing teams build complete content without constantly bouncing between services.
Recommended?
Yes.
It is one of the best out there. And if you’re producing commercially, Starter gets you into paid usage rights and video generation, giving you a cheap way to experiment for yourself.
Regular creators will probably find Creator considerably more practical.
So, if your main goal is high-quality AI narration, voice cloning or dubbing, ElevenLabs remains very difficult to beat.
Just keep one eye on that credit counter.
